How to close IE winodws using vb program?

I want to make a vb program. If there are IE windows opening in the desktop, this program can automatically find these ie windwos and close them. But I don't know what API function can be used to close IE windows.
Once I tried SendMessage function. But I found that SendMessage can close NotePad windows and can't close IE windows.
Who knows the answer, please help me.

Now, I have another question, how can i know the opening windows amount in VB? Is there window array?
