Selecting file types
Use the File Types tab to select the file types (formats) Windows Media Player plays. Windows Media Player will attempt to be the default player for the selected file types. If you want to make another player the default player for a specific file type, clear the check box in the File types list.
To access the File Types tab
On the Tools menu, click Options, and then click File Types.
The following table describes the file types (formats) that Windows Media Player can play.

Windows Media file Windows Media files with .asf, .asx, .wm, .wmx, and .wmp extensions play in the Player.
Windows Media audio file Windows Media files with .wma and .wax extensions play in the Player.
Windows Media audio/video file Windows Media files with .wmv, and .wvx extensions play in the Player.
DVD Video DVD video files with .vob extensions play in the Player. ***
CD Audio Track Files with .cda extensions play in the Player.
Video file Files with .avi extensions play in the Player.
Audio file Files with .wav extensions play in the Player.
Movie File (MPEG) Files with .mpeg, .mpg, .mpe, .m1v, .mp2, .mpv2, .mp2v*, and .mpa extensions play in the Player.
MP3 Format Sound Files with .mp3 and .m3u extensions play in the Player.
MIDI file Files with .mid, .midi, and .rmi extensions play in the Player.
Indeo Video File Files with .ivf extensions play in the Player.
AIFF Format Sound Files with .aif, .aifc, and .aiff extensions play in the Player.
AU Format Sound Files with .au and .snd extensions play in the Player.
*To play .mp2v files, you must have a software or hardware DVD decoder installed on your computer.
Select All
Click to select all the file types in the File types list.
Note If a selected check box is dimmed, Windows Media Player has only partial ownership of the file type. Multiple file extensions are assigned to the file type, but the Player only plays some of those extensions by default. To give the Player full ownership of a file type, double-click the dimmed check box.
