Intel Apology to the Bluetooth SIG, Inc.
7-September, 2001
Bluetooth SIG Members,
On August 30th c|net posted an article titled "Bluetooth has Lost, Declares
Intel Exec" quoting me as saying "Bluetooth is in full retreat." I was
answering a question on the emergence of 802.11b as a standard for wireless
Local Area Networks (WLAN). Unfortunately, the reporter did not grasp that
I was addressing a common mis-perception that the Bluetooth specification
competes with 802.11b as a wireless networking technology (Bluetooth
wireless is not a WLAN). Intel believes the Bluetooth specification and
802.11b are complementary technologies that address different wireless
needs and will coexist in many environments.
Intel Corporation is a firm supporter of the Bluetooth wireless technology
and Special Interest Group. We are actively supporting the industry efforts
to bring this exciting wireless technology to maturity. I regret recent
public statements that were reported out of context and misrepresent
Intel's view of the Bluetooth market.
