post your linux distro and version here.
Generally speaking, rpm may or may not contain the system V init script (well, it's surprised me if it doesn't). Anyway, do the following first:
#ls /etc/init.d
see if you can find any file listed there looks like mysql script
if so, assuming you are on a centos/rhel system, do the following to bring the service up:
#chkconfig mysql on
