1) Can I retire now?
2) If I do nothing to change my career, would I still have my current job in 5 years and be happy with my salary ?
The answer to the first question is most likely no.
The answer to the second quetion could be either yes or no. If the answer is yes, you are in a good position, just enjoy life. If the answer is no, then you need some change in your career planning.
I had similar issue four years ago. At that time, I was working for HP on printer drivers, which I had been doing for 5 years. The job itself is becoming boring, but salary is still quite good. What bothered me is that HP was pushing for more and more out sourcing for software development, mostly to India. Besides printer driver development, the other majoy software field within HP would be firmware development. I have done firmware development before and I did not think it will keep me interested for long. Another thing about HP is that each HP site quite small, about a few thousand people. So there are not many software jobs to choice from at one site. So the conclusion was that I do not see myself having a good software development job with HP in 5 years, and I do not want to go into management.
The action I took was driving 3 hours to the north and work for Microsoft. At Redmond, Washington, Microsoft has over 26,000 employee in a single site, with lots of buildings. There are endless software to write. If you're bored with one field, move to another building to find a new job.
Suggestion: improve yourself, either look for a better job or make sure you're qualified for a better job if you want to.
