Jinhao给出的方案很好，不过用到了boost.any，类型检查丢失了。当然，C的宏业没有。我搞不太清楚的是：boost.any会不会有性能损失？

在java里，Comparable接口只提供了相同类型的比较，C＃我就不熟悉了。

java里实现Integer和Float的比较应该是通过“自动拆箱”来实现的，它倒没有主动去做什么屏蔽，因为int类型和String类型本身就是不可比较的。java1.4中不支持Integer和Float这2个类型直接比较，甚至不支持2个Integer对象使用＞操作符直接比较，而只能使用compareTo。C＃我想应该也是类似的原理吧。

max的参数大部分时候也只是基本类型，复杂的自定义类型最好是转成相近的基本类型进行比较，直接比较则显得语义不清，而且容易犯错。比如Date类型应该可以和long可以比较，但它和double类型如何比较？比较的意思是什么？

int 和 string 的比较调用 < 操作符的时候，应该会编译器提示错误的了，（如果自己不重载的话。）

Ｃ＋＋的模板机制没有约束，看看Ｊａｖａ（或Ｃ＃）的模板机制就会发现，你提到的那个Ｉｎｔｅｇｅｒ和Ｓｔｒｉｎｇ的比较是可以被屏蔽掉的．
比如:

interface Comparable<T>
{
bool operator < (T a, T b);
}

class Integer impl Comparable<Integer>
{
Integer max(Integer a, Integer b);
}

类似于这样的东西，所以，不会有Integer跟String比较的可能。

噢，这么说我的实现是符合你的要求的，我的实现并不完全按照sizeof来比较，里面有2个特化，分别实现了：
1、任何数和double比较，返回double
2、任何数和float比较（double除外)，返回float
3、float和double比较，返回double
4、其它类型的比较，返回sizeof较大的那个类型

如果按照值的大小来确定返回类型，那么要求类型确定以前，值的大小已经比较了，这在C++中可就是说，类型的确定推迟到运行期了。

cpunion(int argc, char** argv)：
是这样的，我前面说了先做一个小小的限制，就是不根据值的大小返回类型，而是根据类型范围大小返回类型。

不过你的程序中类型范围的判定是通过类型对象的大小进行的（或许我搞错了？）。这个对于float和long long行不通。

上面的实现还是对的，我使用windef.h中的max宏通过了所有测试。

c++0x中提到了auto/typeof关键字，如果实现了，就不用写这么麻烦了。按c++ 0x keynote中描述的，应该可以写成这样：
template <class T, class U>
typeof(t > u ? t : u) max (const T& t, const U& u)
{
return t > u ? t : u;
}

不过目前还没有编译器支持。g++编译器支持的typeof不能从函数参数中这样取类型，变通了一下：
template <class T, class U>
typeof(T() > U() ? T() : U()) MaX (const T& t, const U& u)
{
return t > u ? t : u;
}

结果编译时，提示出这个：

float的范围是±1.5 × 10−45 到 ±3.4 × 1038，long和__int64都达不到这个范围，所以我觉得这2个类型的float比较的话，应该返回float类型。

以上测试全部在vc8 beta2版本下通过，为了验证assert是工作正常的，特意在结尾写了一个assert(0);

修改了一点：

return ResultType(t > u ? t : u); // <---这一处，这样应该比前面那个更通用吧，对于类实例的比较。
}

测试增加了字符串的比较：
assert (std::string("hello") < "world");
assert (typeid(MaX(std::string("hello"), "world")) == typeid(std::string));
assert (MaX(std::string("hello"), "world") == "world");

assert (typeid(MaX(std::string("world"), "hello")) == typeid(std::string));
assert (MaX(std::string("hello"), "world") == "world");

佩服 cpunion(int argc, char** argv)

不过似乎还有点问题。

比如：

long long ago = 6; //sizeof ago is 8
float f = 8.3; //sizeof f is 4
max(ago, f);

return what type?

不过还是非常欣赏 cpunion(int argc, char** argv) 的探索精神。

刚刚又测试了一下，O2级别下效率也是相等的，是后台程序影响了测试结果。
