Details of the new JPEG-2000 standard, which is due to be published in March 2000, were released at the July meeting of SC29.
The new standard will cover bi-level, gray-level and color images.
It will provide a lower bit-rate mode of operation than the existing JPEG and JBIG standards it will replace, and will provide better rate distortion and subjective image quality.
Low bit-rate compression performance
– Below 0.25bpp grey scale images
Lossless and lossy compression
– Both in the same codestream
Large images
– Images greater than 64Kx64K
Single decompression architecture:Current architecture has 44 modes (not all used)
Transmission in noisy environments
Computer Generated Imagery
Compound documents
– Text (bi-level) images
