How to run CGI

I wrote a cgi program using c++, when I put it under the cgi-bin directory, and click the button on the page linked to call this cgi program, the result is not an answer page supportted. A dialogue box is given, let me to download the cig file, I think there must be some problem of the setting apache, can anyone tell me how to fix the problem to enable my cgi program to run under apache?
